What if reading this summer felt less like homework and more like an adventure?
This year, we're excited to introduce the Midsummer Summer Reading Passport—a self-guided summer challenge designed to help kids, tweens, and teens discover new books, try creative activities, explore their communities, and build a summer full of stories.
Rather than tracking pages or minutes, our passports encourage readers to engage with books in meaningful and imaginative ways. Participants will complete challenges, record their adventures, and create a personal record of their summer reading journey.
We've created two versions:
Young Readers Passport (approximately preK–3)
Filled with accessible reading challenges, drawing prompts, family activities, and simple adventures perfect for emerging readers.
Older Readers & Teens Passport
Designed for independent readers who want more choice, creativity, exploration, and literary challenges throughout the summer.
Unlike many summer reading programs, there are no weekly check-ins or stamps required. Readers can work at their own pace throughout June, July, and August. When summer ends, participants can bring their completed passport back to Midsummer Books in August to earn prizes and celebrate a summer well spent.
The passports connect with our summer themes:
Imagination & Belonging
Dragons & Creatures
Oceans & Underwater Worlds
Secret Worlds & Magic Schools
Space & Stars
Mysteries & Maps
Folklore & Fairytales
Stories of Summer
Along the way, readers might discover a new favorite author, create a map, read outside, write a story, visit a local landmark, learn about another culture, or simply spend a quiet afternoon lost in a great book. Most importantly, the passport is a reminder that reading isn't a chore, it's a way to explore the world.
Passports are available to pick up at Midsummer Books inside Our Mutual Friend
Let's make this a summer full of stories!
